SCAR-H Project

So, The SCAR-H I was trying to sell several months ago I have started customizing it.

So far, I've broken down the gearbox and done the usual longevity mods, bought a new barrel, and ordered some other parts.

The work has not been without trouble, however. Evike.com. in their infinite wisdom, decided to ship me the wrong parts then tell me I don't what I'm talking about when I tell them it's the wrong one. It took me sending them a picture of what they advertise and what I received to get them to send me the link to the RMA form.

In the meantime, I stripped the externals down and painted the upper and lower a tan color and got the new parts installed in the gearbox. I am awaiting a new spring, spring guide, and the VFC SCAR selector plate that Evike.com should have sent me me in the first place.

I obtained a JG Blue motor to pull the M130 I am waiting to receive.

I'm looking forward to getting all kinds of pictures and short videos to show you a finished product.

The Gun Crate

So, after having airsoft guns clutter my workspace forever, I decided to build a gun crate to house my armory, and to transport my stuff to and from the field.

So, I went to Lowe's. I bought some #2 white pine and I made up the balance from stock I already had in my house. I also bought some Rustoleum green camo paint and some 1-1/4 inch wood screws.

My first job when I got home was to cut the pine to length. I measured my KWA for the depth I would need and I cut the 8 pine boards down to length.

I was cutting by hand, without the aid of a bench saw, so some of the cuts were not exactly straight. This is ok, if accuracy is less important.

After this, it was straight assembly. I assembled the sides.

I took a picture with my KM4 inside for scale

I put the remaining sides on, and attached a lid. I had to improvise a lid out of some plywood because I cut the pine too short. I used some decorative hinges to close it

I then turned my work to the interior of the box, I screwed in slots to hold up the weapons in transit

Somewhere in there was a paint job

And that was after a few hours of work and a few beers

M4 CQB-R Build Part 2

I finished the build, finally. After many headaches and buying parts I probably didn't need, I decided to use the original body I bought for it.

I rewired and closed the gearbox, and put it into the lower. I used 16 gauge wire and wired it to Dean's. I used a KWA stock M110 spring and motor I had lying around just to finish out the build.

It took a while for the right parts to come in for me to be able to put on the 416 style short stock, so it's a fixed stock. I may put on a buffer tube and a crane stock in the future, but not right now.

I got it chrono'd at 280 fps using .25 BB's, which is around 325 fps with .20's. I have a new spring coming in next week, as well as a high speed motor, which should give me a boost in fps as well as an increase in fire speed.

M4 CQB-R Build Part 1

I just about had everything set to assembly this "as is" but my attention to detail got the best of me. I figured while I was here, I would do a step by step of what's on my work bench this week.

The first thing I started with was gearbox cleaning and disassembly. I bought an AIM TOP V2 gearbox almost a year ago and I had it in my KM4 until I found a KWA gearbox that fit better. I disassembled the gearbox and cleaned it using degreaser I bought at the local AutoZone. I had this gearbox overhauled a while back by a local shop and they did an ok job but not quite up to specs. The only changes they made were to replace the wiring harness, and even that broke.

After I got the thing apart, I removed all the gears and springs, the trigger, the selector plate and switch, and the wiring harness. I repaired the broken motor clip and shrink wrapped it. Once the inside was appropriately clean I added a couple drops of TurtleWax finishing compound, smeared it around, and fired up the wire brush on my Dremel to start polishing the interior of the gearbox. Some recommend doing the entire gearbox, which is a good idea, but I just do the areas where the moving parts are.

In the mean time, I used liquid gasket maker and seal the cylinder head inside the cylinder. This should create a complete air seal provided the piston is in good shape, which it does. On the advice of others, I sanded down the front of the tappet plate and super glued the air nozzle to the tappet plate

Now I'm just waiting for the other parts and I'll move on to assembly.

Adventures in Repairs

I finally got my KWA KM4A1 out to play, which was pretty nice. The motor kept making the high pitched whine which means that the motor was at an incorrect height. I get the thing home, and yeah, one of the screws cracked the hole it screws in to causing the motor plate to not adjust properly. While it was annoying this is an excellent time to replace the pistol grip with a MagPul grip, however.

I am supposed to get a big shipment from Evike soon to finish an M4 CQB-R build I hope to take up to Mooseherd when I get a chance. I could have finished it immediately but my attention to details got a hold of me, or maybe it was boredom. I decided to go hunting for a metal M4 body, and I think I found one. I also decided to tear the gearbox down and give it a good polish, seal up the cylinder, and do some other detail work to the internals. Of course I'll reshim and relube the gearbox, and the thing will roar when I get it finished.

I got my pinion puller the other day and I used it to pull one of the pinions off my Matrix motor. As I screwed it down, it shattered the pinion gear right off the shaft. It made removal easy since the set screw stripped inside the pinion. My Dremel couldn't cut a deep enough groove for a screwdriver to get a bite and my drill battery was dead. That motor will now go into my KM4 and the stock KWA motor will be moved over to the CQB build. Should give me a rate of fire increase, and now I'm in the market for LiPo batteries.
